Design
Choose a color scheme which is in keeping with the rest of your property. Consider whether a static or rollable design is most appropriate for your purpose. Material
Most awnings are made from acrylic, vinyl or plastic materials and are generally rainproof, as well as providing shade. It is possible however for some to become damaged if it rains particularly hard, simply because of the weight of the water pooling on them. Fabric units are less robust and more prone to damage, as well as not being waterproof. Fabric will also fade faster than acrylic or vinyl.
Installation
Before you decide to install a canopy awning, it's important to ensure that, if required, you have the necessary permission from your local planning office or resident's committee. Although this is rare, it may be that there are some restrictions regarding the size, design or color of the awning you are allowed to install in certain locations. Canopies can weigh a fair amount and this needs to be taken into account. The walls you intend to fix them to should be in good order, even, and free of any obstacles. Whilst a competent DIYer should be able to handle the installation, professional help is highly recommended.Maintenance and Lifespan
No maintenance other than routine cleaning is normally required. If a rollable awning becomes wet, it's good practise to leave it extended until it's dry, before rolling it up. The lifespan of a canopy awning is dependent on a number of factors. Apart from the quality of the unit installed, weather conditions and the materials used play a big part. On average, you can expect a lifespan of six to ten years.
